JKA WF Malta would like to announce that the ALL Malta JKA Winter Championships shall be held on Sunday 28th January 2024 at De La Salle College

Between the 5th and 7th January 2024, JKA WF Malta held its first Winter Kangeiko. Kangeiko is a Japanese Budo Tradition - training in the early morning during the coldest time of the year. The purpose of Kangeiko is to begin the New Year by challenging oneself, waking up early in the morning to train in cold weather, to set the same spirit of commitment for Training throughout the rest of the year.

Instructors class being organized by JKA WF MALTA for JKA members who currently teach or for those interested to help in teaching in the future. Event to be held Thursday 13th April at MCAST Paola at 7pm.

On the 25th and 26th of March, 4 JKA WF Malta members participated in the international JKA Karate seminar held in Inverigo, in the province of Como.

Last Sunday 23rd October 2022, 12 members from JKA WF MALTA have completed the First Aid Course led by Ms. Danika Formosa, First Aid and CPR instructor. For JKA WF MALTA, maintaining health and safety at all times is of utmost importance. A standard brought about by our members’ sterling commitment to ensuring a safe environment with diligent and timely first aid responders in case of eventual emergency. JKA WF MALTA would like to thank Mr. Shaun Mawdsley from Malta Red Cross for the organisation of the course, and The Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector for sponsoring this course.

On the 31st July, JKA WF Malta organised JKA Dan and Judge and Instructor Qualification Licence examinations, carried out by Japanese Instructor Naito Takeshi Sensei, 8th Dan JKA WF Italia National Representative, at the end of the International JKA Gasshuku in Malta . All 23 JKA WF Malta members successfully passed their Shodan, Nidan and Sandan black belt examinations and 5 members also successfully achieved their Instructor and Judge Licences. JKA WF MALTA - 1st International JKA Gasshuku - July 2022On the 30th and 31st July, JKA WF Malta held their first International JKA Gasshuku at the National Sports School in Pembroke, greatly anticipated by all after a two-year long wait due to the global pandemic. Regretfully, we have been informed that All Training of Karate has to be stopped, even though we had been following the COVID19 MITIGATION Measures. The new restrictions, specifically point out, that No Group Training can take place, even if we have taken the necessary steps, and disallowed contact training for a while now. Our members fought with pride to represent Malta and JKA MALTA SKA with Paul Falzon winning 2nd place in Men’s Kumite, Leanne Falzon 1st Place Kumite and 2nd place Kata in Females over 30, Yuki Nocilla 1st Place Female Kumite 21- 29 years category and Yanes Nocilla 2nd place in Team Kumite after being selected to fight for one of JKA Germany’s teams.

Between the 18th and 19th of May 2019, JKA MALTA SKA held its Annual Spring Training Camp with record participation of over 100 members from SKA MCAST Paola, Tarxien SKA Kids, SKA Nakama, SKA Ghaxaq and SKA Kenshinkan Branch Dojos. RECORD participation of 130 JKA MALTA SKA Members at a Special 2018 End of Year Event this week!

A truly Impressive performance was demonstrated by all 106 JKA MALTA SKA students who successfully passed their grading examination by Chief Instructor Sensei Edward Aquilina, 5th Dan JKA.

Between the 14th and 16th December 2018 JKA MALTA SKA members senpai Graziella Rocco and senpai Luke Rocco participated in the renowned JKA Christmas Camp at La Roche-sur-Yon, France. Training was held over 3 days and led by the exceptional Naka Sensei 8th Dan JKA HQ Instructor, Kurihara Sensei 5th Dan JKA HQ Instructor and Daniel Lautier Sensei 7th Dan JKA. A yearly international event with a special atmosphere, not to be missed!

During the month of January, 2 SKA Members, Clayton Scerri and Janice Scerri, travelled to Germany to participate at Sensei Shinji Akita's Winter Training - KANGEIKO 2018 -in the beautiful city of Limburg.

On the 18th of January, 2 JKA MALTA SKA Members, Sensei Paul Falzon and Senpai Leanne Falzon, travelled to Japan for a challenging 3 week training experience at several of the most renowned dojos in the World, amongst them, the JKA Headquarters in Tokyo.

On the 21st of December, JKA MALTA SKA celebrated the end of a successful 2017 with a Special End of Year Demonstration. The event was held at the MCAST Upper Gym with SKA members from Paola, Handaq Kenshinkan and Tarxien Nakama Children and Adult Clubs performing to the spirited beats of a live guest performance by the Tama Tnabar Band, a voluntary association empowering people with various difficulties to succeed holistically in Society.

National Maltese Karate Association - SKA MALTA - is proud to announce its now official, International Registration as 'JKA MALTA SKA' by the JKA - Japan Karate Association Headquarters in Tokyo, the highest Karate Authority in Japan and Worldwide.

Between the 25th and the 29th of August 2017, 29 SKA-MALTA members attended the International JKA Italy Gasshuku in Vieste, accompanying SKA Chief Instructor Sensei Edward Aquilina, with so far, the biggest number of SKA Maltese Representatives participating abroad.

In Summer of 2017, SKA Sensei David Salem Rizzo 3rd Dan and Senpai Michelle Salem Rizzo 2nd Dan, travelled to Tokyo, Japan for a unique Honeymoon Training Holiday, an excellent opportunity to train with the world's most renowned Japanese Karate Instructors.

Over the past weeks, SKA Black Belts Luke Rocco and Graziella Rocco, travelled to Belgium to participate in the ‘24th International JKA Stage Sensei Miyazaki‘ and for training at local Belgian Shotokan Karate Dojos.

On Monday 26th June 2017, 2 SKA Members Sensei Keith Falzon and Kyu grade Kimberly Borg joined Shotokan Mu-Shin Dojo in Barcelona, Spain to train with reknowned instructor Sensei Domingo Sanchez Perez.

Training was based on fundamental Kihon leading onto one step Kumite and Kata. Sensei Domingo Sanchez Perez, the Chief Instructor, and also Kumite and Kata Champion in the recent past, constantly displayed powerful dynamic technique and whose students also demonstrated exceptional Budo Karate Spirit.

SKA would like to thank Sensei Domingo Sanchez Perez and Shotokan Karate-Do Mushin Dojo for their hospitality, Karate Spirit and friendship, and for giving our members a remarkable opportunity to join in training, with hoping to meet you all again the near future.

Between the 11th and 20th June, two of our SKA Members travelled from Malta to Tokyo for training with some of the World’s most reknowned JKA Japanese Instructors at Top Dojos in Japan.

Over the past weeks SKA Black Belt, Sensei Kenneth Farrugia, travelled to West Sussex, UK, for training with highly esteemed instructors Sensei Paul Herbert and Sensei Jess Lavender, from yet another prestigious Shotokan Karate Association in UK – the ASK- Academy of Shotokan Karate.

On Thursday 29th March 2017, 44 SKA members underwent a grading examination by SKA Chief Instructor Sensei Edward Aquilina, Sensei Kenneth Farrugia, Sensei David Salem Rizzo, Sensei Keith Falzon and Sensei Paul Falzon.

On Friday the 17th March 2017, 12 SKA Black Belts and 2 SKA Brown Belts accompanied SKA Chief Instructor, Sensei Edward Aquilina to the International JKA Gasshuku held in Cantu, Milan.

During the 2nd week of March, two SKA Black Belts Luke Rocco and Graziella Rocco travelled to Portugal to particpate in a 9 day Training Seminar, between the 11th and 19th of March, with one of the most superb and charismatic JKA Japan Headquarters Instructor, Sensei Tatsuya Naka 7th Dan JKA.

SKA is pleased to announce the First Training Camp for 2017, this coming weekend at the Archbishop’s Seminary in Rabat. Five training sessions will be held over the three days, covering Kihon, Kata and Kumite. Social events will also follow every evening, not to be missed!

With a successful start to the New year calendar, an outstanding number of SKA members gathered to participate in the first SKA Training Camp, another major highlight for 2017. The event was held over 3 days between the 24th and 26th of February at the Archbishop’s Seminary in Rabat.

It is with great pleasure for SKA to introduce and once again formally welcome top JKF Kumite Competitor and 2015's JKA Germany Kumite champion to Malta; our highly esteemed guest, Ms Yuki Fujita.

On Thursday 8th December, SKA Black Belts set off to yet another Training destination, this time to participate in JKA WF Hellas' first official JKA Gasshuku in Athens, Greece.

On the 21st November 2016, SKA Black Belt Sensei Keith Falzon, flew to the UK, for a week of hard training at two of Britain's strongest KUGB Clubs in Liverpool

On Friday the 11th November 2016, 6 SKA Black Belts accompanied SKA Chief Instructor, Sensei Edward Aquilina to the International JKA Gasshuku held in Cantu, Milan.

On Sunday 30th October 2016, 4 SKA Athletes were invited, by JKA Italy's Chief Instructor Sensei Takeshi Naito, to participate in the 7th Annual JKA Italy National Championships which this year took place in Maranello, the beautiful city of Ferrari in Bologna.

On Thursday 29th September, 31 SKA members underwent a special grading examination by SKA Chief Instructor Sensei Edward Aquilina, Sensei Kenneth Farrugia and Sensei David Salem Rizzo.

On Thursday 29th September, 30 members from SKA Malta will be undergoing a grading examination to advance in their Belt level. This is a special Association Grading date as Leanne Grech and Christina Desira shall be going for their 2nd Dan Examination, whilst Keith Falzon and Paul Falzon will also be going for their 3rd Dan Examination. We wish all our students the best of luck and an excellent performance.

It is with great pleasure for SKA to introduce and formally welcome our highly esteemed guest, Ms Yuki Fujita. At only 22 years of age, Ms Fujita, has already gained many Kumite Championship titles locally in Japan and also became JKA Germany's Kumite Champion in April 2015.

On Friday 26th August 2016, 25 SKA athletes will be heading to Vieste, Italy, together with SKA Chief Instructor Sensei Edward Aquilina for 3 days of intensive training with JKA Italy. Instruction will be headed by Sensei Takeshi Naito 7th Dan, JKA Italy's Chief Instructor and Head Coach for the Italian National Squad, and Sensei Masao Kawasoe 7th Dan, JKA England and Scotland Chief Instructor.

All SKA Athletes are enthusiastically awaiting this training experience, after several weeks of constant daily training, as it will continue to enhance our good relations with JKA Italy. We all look forward to working together with JKA Italy to continue the growth of authentic, high standard Karate in Malta over the coming years.

On the 26th August 2016, 25 SKA members accompanied SKA Chief Instructor Sensei Edward Aquilina, Sensei Kenneth Farrugia and Sensei David Salem Rizzo to beautiful Vieste in Puglia, Italy to participate in the International Gasshuku organised by JKA Italy, between the 26th and 28th of August.

During a short stay in Athens, Greece, Black belts Senpai Luke Rocco and Senpai Graziella Rocco travelled to Piraeus Athens, for training at the Karate Piraeus. Training was led by Sensei John Mantzaris, 3th Dan, and Sensei Artemisia Mata both Instructors at the Traditional Karate Center in Piraeus where rigorous sessions of Kihon and Kata Drills followed.

SKA would like to thank Sensei John Mantzaris, and Sensei Artemisia Mata and Karate Piraeus members for their hospitality and cordial welcoming, and the opportunity to join them in training during their short stay in Greece. We look forward to meeting again in training in the coming years!

Following the successful participation of SKA Shotokan Karate-Do Association at training seminars with JKA Italy, in Imola and La Spezia last January, 9 SKA Black belts accompanied SKA Chief Instructor Sensei Edward Aquilina again last week, between the 11th and 14th of July, for further training at two of Italy’s most renowned dojos.

Between the 22nd and 24th April SKA black belts Senpai Paul and Senpai Leanne attended the JKA WF Gasshuku, this time held in the beautiful city of Windsor, south of London, U.K. Training sessions were held over 3 days under the instruction of Japanese instructors Sensei Mori Toshihiro 8th Dan JKA from Tokyo HQ, Sensei Nemoto Keisuke 5th Dan JKA HQ Instructor and All Japan Kumite Champion, and Sensei Kawasoe Masao 7th Dan JKA UK.

In the first week of February 2016, Black belts, Senpai Luke Rocco and Senpai Graziella Rocco travelled to Frankfurt, Germany, for training at the reknowned Karate-Dojo Ippon. Training was led by Sensei Risto Kiiskila, 6th Dan, Instructor at the German JKA Karate Federation (DJKB) eV where rigorous sessions of Kihon, Kata and Kumite Drills followed.

SKA would like to thank Sensei Risto Kiiskilä, and Karate-Dojo Ippon members for their hospitality and cordial welcoming, and the opportunity to join them in training during their short stay in Germany. We look forward to meeting again in training in the coming years!

On Friday 15th January 2016, SKA black belts accompanied Sensei Edward Aquilina, SKA Chief Instructor, together with Sensei Kenneth Farrugia 3rd Dan and Sensei David Salem Rizzo 3rd Dan to Bologna, Italy for training seminars organised by the Japan Karate Association in Italy.

Genuine Karate establishes sincere friendships in training no matter the origin, no matter the differences. Over the past year, SKA was fortunate to have encountered numerous karatekas from all over the world who have coincidentally crossed our paths in our continuous search for true karate. These encounters have undoubtedly served to enrich the karate experience we are all searching for.

On Tuesday 8th September 2015, SKA black belt instructors and several 1st Kyus accompanied SKA Chief Instructor Sensei Edward Aquilina to London, UK for a week of hard training at London Dojos.

On Monday 6th July, 2015, Shotokan Karate-DO Association held its second grading for Adult Kyu Grades at MCAST Paola. The grading examination was led by SKA Chief Instructor Sensei Edward, assisted by Sensei David and Sensei Kenneth

On Saturday 21st March 2015, SKA Shotokan Karate-Do Association held a JKA Shobu Ippon Individual Kumite Competition at St. Theresa Mriehel Girls Secondary School, Birkirkara. It was the first JKA Shobu Ippon Competition to be held by SKA after its affiliation with JKA World Federation last October 2014.

On Monday 9th March, the Shotokan Karate-DO Association held a Grading Examination for Junior Kyu Grades.

A celebration of karate attitude and strong bonds, hard work and dedication

On Saturday 29th November, SKA took part in the Mc Donald’s ‘Share a Smile’ initiative to raise funds for ‘L-Istrina’, Malta’s major Charity event in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund.

JKA Malta Club - SKA Shotokan Karate-DO Association held a Grading Examination for its Kyu Grades on Thursday 27th November 2014.

Between the 14th and 16th of November, JKA Malta clubs, amongst which SKA Shotokan Karate-Do Association, took part in the biannual Gasshaku in Malta directed by visiting Instructor Sensei Tomlin, 6th Dan JKA Technical Advisor to Malta

Black belts from Shotokan Karate-Do Association and several assisting brown belts, participated in a number of events this week, to raise awareness of this unique discipline and the opportunities available to learn and benefit from the way of Karate.

Fourteen of SKA’s black belts board the plane with Sensei Edward, all eager and ready for a week of hard training in London. Despite our hunger and aching muscles, we packed our Gis and headed to Oasis SKC for our first training session with JKA England’s Sensei Ohta.

Every year, SKA holds an Annual Summer Beach Training Session as part of its social events outside of the Dojo.

On the 28th of July 2014, SKA was invited by Make It Happen- JUGS, Malta, to participate in the launching of Hilton’s Worldwide Initiative ‘Make it Right’, featured in this week's Times of Malta supplement Magazine 'Hilton Malta Calling'

The Shotokan Karate-Do Association took part in the Gasshuku held at Ta’ Giorni, the past 11th, 12th, and 13th of July. The Training Seminar was organized by JKA Malta, and the sessions were conducted by Sensei Roy Tomlin (6th Dan JKA, Senior Instructor, National Coach, Examiner and Judge for JKA England).

On the 8th of June 2014, one week on from the Stella Maris Demonstration, nine black belts set out to execute another demonstration, this time at a Football Marathon in Aid of the Puttinu Cares Foundation (a non-governmental organization that supports children and adults suffering from cancer).

This October, SKA participated in the JKA Malta Gasshaku held between Friday 11th and Sunday 13th October with visiting instructors from JKAE Sensei Ohta (7th Dan JKA) and Sensei Roy Tomlin (6th Dan JKA)

Between the 4th and the 7th of May 2012, several SKA black and brown belts participated in the 9th JKA England Spring Course that has been held annually by JKAE for the past 10 years.

On the 17th August 2011, S.K.A. organised a Shobu Ippon Friendly Competition for SKA brown and black belts. The event was held at the Verdala Boys Secondary School, Cospicua, Malta.

In April 2011, several SKA members participated in the JKA England Spring International Course in Gilford, UK, which took place over four days between Friday the 29th April and Monday 2nd May. The event brought together hundreds of karatekas worldwide to train with renowned Japanese Instructors from the JKA Headquarters in Japan, namely Tanaka Sensei, Sawada Sensei, Osaka Sensei and Inokoshi Sensei, amongst whom was JKA England Chief Instructor Sensei Ohta.
