In April 2011, several SKA members participated in the JKA England Spring International Course in Gilford, UK, which took place over four days between Friday the 29th April and Monday 2nd May. The event brought together hundreds of karatekas worldwide to train with renowned Japanese Instructors from the JKA Headquarters in Japan, namely Tanaka Sensei, Sawada Sensei, Osaka Sensei and Inokoshi Sensei, amongst whom was JKA England Chief Instructor Sensei Ohta.
Tanaka Sensei, 8th Dan JKA, emphasised the importance of effectiveness of any technique through in-depth focus on the correct route, hip movement and direction of power. His passion for teaching and humour and his astounding speed when demonstrating the techniques showed everyone a glimpse of the skills that had made him so famous.
Osaka Sensei 8th Dan, JKA HQ Vice-Chief Instructor and General Manager of the Technical Division, concentrated on hip flexibility and mobility exercises, the focus of power with a shift in hip movement and Tai Sabaki.
Sawada Sensei, 7th Dan from the JKA Europe Technical Committee and instructor in Belgium, emphasized proper hikite and removal of tension for execution of sharp reaction technique.
Various kumite techniques with shifting Footwork were practised with Inokoshi Sensei, 4th Dan JKA, who also emphasized proper kamae and importance of heel stability in movement.
An inspiring afterword was given by Tanaka Sensei, words that got to the heart of the matter:
Throughout the course, instructors continuously demonstrated the way things should be done. Before this knowledge can be passed on to others, it has to be understood correctly. Understanding meant continuous, repetitive practice of basic fundamentals, to be able to build up on current knowledge, and understanding reason for things we practice. There is nothing in Karate that has no reason, every technique, stance and movement were designed for a reason.
Reasons revealed only through continuous practice..
