Between the 5th and the 26th of February 2018, 3 JKA MALTA SKA members senpai Yanes Nocilla, 2nd Dan JKA, senpai Yuki Fujita 2nd Dan JKA and Ezio Buffa 1st Dan JKA travelled to Japan for training with some of Japan’s most renowned JKA Karate Instructors.
On arrival, they joined another 2 of our members, Sensei Paul Falzon 3rd Dan JKA and senpai Leanne Falzon 2nd Dan JKA, who had been in Tokyo training for 2 weeks. All 5 members travelled North, to the Miyagi District, for training at the Wakuya Dojo. Training was led by Sensei Atsuo Yamazaki and Sensei Tetsuya Kurosawa who led a dynamic and physically challenging Kumite session for all his fiery, enthusiastic and technically sharp students; some of whom have been chosen to further their training at Top Karate Universities in Japan.
After a tiring day of travelling from Ishinomaki, their journey continued at the renowned Sangenjaya Dojo, with an intense training session of hard fundamental kihon and kata led by Ogata Masaru Sensei and Yoshida Sensei. This was followed by a remarkable experience and an honour for our members when they were invited to participate in hard Line Kumite with several senior Black Belts present, all with superb, technical sharpness and exceptional high standard authentic Karate.
On Monday 10th February evening training at the JKA Headquarters consisted of strong fundamental kihon training with Nemoto Sensei, 5th Dan JKA, and rigorous kumite drills by Shiina Sensei 7th Dan JKA. During their stay in Tokyo, our members grasped the opportunity to train with Naka Sensei, 7th Dan JKA, at his Koishikawa, Akabane and Myogadani Dojos. Training was constantly both physically and mentally demanding and a pleasure to experience Naka Sensei’s interesting explanations of technical detail and observe his superb, impressive movement. Sessions were followed by a special invitation to dinner and drinks by Sensei Naka himself, a special opportunity and an honour for our members to share true Karate conversation.
Throughout the week, our members also met and trained with the one-of-a-kind Chuubachi Sensei, 3rd Dan JKA, several times. Very difficult, excruciating sessions focussed on the basics of strong stance but, in the end, always exciting, and a great pleasure to experience true Karate Spirit and attitude by all members present despite the difficulty.
A trip to Kyoto also offered a unique opportunity to train at the Kyoto Gikannochi Dojo Branch – Oikonochi Dojo with Sensei Uno. Despite the capacity restrictions, all Karatekas present gave their maximum effort to train to the best of their ability. Our members were warmly welcomed and strongly commended to train at Oikonochi Dojo again next year.
It was a true privilege and an honour for our members to have been constantly given several opportunities to train with Exceptional top Japanese Instructors throughout their stay in Japan. JKA MALTA SKA would like to thank all the superb Japanese Karatekas at JKA HQ Honbu Dojo, Sangenjaya Dojo, Koishikawa Dojo, Akabane Dojo, Myogadani Dojo, Wakuya Dojo and Oikonochi Dojo for their warm welcome and constant hospitality shown to our members. An intense experience of Great Friendships, Great Training and Great authentic Karate!
